Jared presented a seminar on composing for Drum kit at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music on 21st September.
The presentation was on how to compose for Drum kit from a session players perspective with advice on how to make a notated part more fluid to read and possible to play. Jared discussed different methods of notation from fully notated scores to short hand style musical road maps. Jared also demonstrated advanced playing techniques, different tonal and textural options, tuning and from a coordination point of view – what is physically possible to play on the modern drum kit. All of these topics were related back to composing for Drum kit and what to expect of a session drummer. Jared provided some score examples and played excerpts of – ‘The Black Page’ by Frank Zappa, ‘Sub Tropic’ by The Daryl Pratt Sextet, ‘Whole lotta love’ by Led Zeppelin and a piece by student composer Joe Manton. There were 60 composition students in attendance and there were some great questions asked by the students. Jared is making plans to present this seminar at other Universities and colleges in the near future.
