Avant Garde Musical / Visual Duo with Flutter Lyon (singer/visual artist). Described as ‘Glitched out vocal hymns over smashed up drumkit whims”
Focaleland recorded their completely improvised album at Studio 301 in Sydney. It was mixed by Richie B (Triosk, PVT, Bertie Blackman)
Jared Underwood (drummer, composer, producer) and Flutter Lyon (performer, vocalist, visual artist) formed a new collaborative musical duo in late 2009. The duo began experimenting in a recording studio with a pop song writing focus but soon discovered that the style of music they were most excited about creating was that of a more improvised and spontaneous nature. After many hours jamming and experimentation they arrived at a sound and aesthetic they are happy to present in a live setting.
In a performance you are likely to hear and see Flutter set-up looped vocals and guitar riffs with multiple loop pedals all the while creating her lyrics on the fly. Jared rhythmically reacts to the organic loops playing his sculptural drum kit using experimental techniques. The type of music created is likely to feature extremes in dynamics and emotion. From fragile whispered reversed vocals and haunting turkish bells to hair razing primal vocal screams and hypnotic angular percussive rhythms.
They are hell bent on exploring new sounds and creating adventurous musical journeys for the listener to experience within the willingly chosen limitations of voice, guitar and drums. They have performed a live improvised set for fashion designer Konstantina Mittas at 2010 Australian fashion week. They have also recently performed at the prestigious Sherman Gallery. They have recently completed mixing of their soon to be released studio improvised album recorded at Studio 301 and mixed by Richie Belkner at Free Energy Device.
